Risk management consists of the systematic identification, analysis, assessment,treatment, monitoring and communication of risks. Many projects fail, either operationally or financially. Many companies have become insolvent because they have not paid enough attention to risk. CAC offers through its Associates a method for risk management known as RAMP.

RAMP was developed jointly by the actuarial and civil engineering professions as a comprehensive framework within which risks can be managed effectively and financial values placed upon them. It aims to achieve as much certainty as possible about long-term risk and uncertainty of future events. In the case of a new project, the RAMP method covers the project's entire lifecycle, from initial conception to eventual termination. The process facilitates risk mitigation and provides a system for the control of the remaining risks.

The RAMP method is disciplined and ensures that all major issues get addressed. It can be used for:

Appraising new projects.

Deciding on whether to invest in a project.

Acquisitions.

Launching a new product or service.

Reducing risks in an ongoing business.

CAC can help in assessing the risks inherent in engineered projects. This is called Risk Engineering and, in essence, is a sub-element of the total Risk Management process.

Risk Engineering applies engineering to eliminate and reduce hazards and relies firstly on the conduct of a thorough risk assessment to identify potential hazards.

A detailed risk assessment involves the quantitative and/or qualitative analysis of uncertainties in planning, design, operation and maintenance, in the context of engineering applications and projects.

CAC utilises a logical/methodical approach to identify risks, with the aim of resolving the root causes and reduce risks to acceptable levels.
